Answer
Even though children are often less affected by COVID-19 compared to adults, they can still be infected and potentially develop severe illness. Currently, there is limited evidence on what medical conditions are linked to an increased risk of COVID-19 in children. The CDC lists the following conditions that might increase a child's risk for severe illness from COVID-19:
- Obesity
- Severe genetic disorders
- Severe neurologic disorders
- Inherited metabolic disorders
- Sickle cell disease
- Congenital (or since birth) heart disease
- Diabetes
- Chronic kidney disease
- Asthma
- Chronic lung diseases
- Weakened immune system
