A hoop house, also known as a high tunnel, represents an opportunity for limited control over the inside environment by manipulating natural fluxes of energy (e.g., sunlight, air and soil temperature, wind). Greenhouses, unlike hoop houses, tend to have an active heating/cooling system and provide supplementary light. This allows for greater control over the internal environment, but both hoop houses and greenhouses are used to control environments.
