A ruminant is a hoofed animal that has a rumen, a modification of the stomach that helps the animal digest fibrous feed—such as grass and hay—that the enzymes found in most mammals stomach cannot break down. This allows animals to efficiently obtain the energy they need from plant-based foods. Some examples of domestic ruminants are cattle, sheep, and goats.
