What is animal welfare?

Physical health is an integral component of animal welfare, but scientists are starting to place more and more emphasis on an animal’s mental or emotional state.

The World Organization for Animal Health defines animal welfare as “the physical and mental state of an animal in relation to the conditions in which it lives and dies.”

This definition, used by many animal welfare scientists across the world, highlights the importance of both an animal’s physical and mental state throughout its life.
