What is a buffer strip?

A buffer strip is a strip of plants—usually grass, but other native plants can be used as well—planted between an agricultural field and a waterway, like a ditch, creek, or pond. The purpose of buffer strips is to prevent nutrient runoff from agricultural fields into waterways, and to help prevent erosion along the edges of waterways.
