According to the CDC, severe illness from COVID-19 can result in hospitalization, admission to the ICU, requiring intubation or mechanical ventilation, or death. 

Risk of severe illness from COVID-19 increases steadily as you age, however, it is not only those over 65 who are at an increased risk. 

As of November 2, 2020, adults of any age with these underlying medical conditions are at an increased risk of severe illness:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathy
  • Weakened immune system from an organ transplant
  • Obesity and severe obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Smoking
  • Type 2 diabetes 

 

Adults of any age might be at an increased risk for severe illness with the following conditions:

  • Moderate to severe asthma
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • High blood pressure
  • Weakened immune system
  • Neurologic conditions, such as dementia
  • Liver disease
  • Being overweight
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Thalassemia (a type of blood disorder)
  • Type 1 diabetes
