A food desert is an area that lacks healthy, affordable food. Food deserts can exist in urban, suburban, and rural areas. For some communities, a food desert means there are no grocery stores or restaurants within walking distance or a short bus ride away. For others, the only local food options may be corner stores and fast food restaurants.

Without a car or the ability to reach fresh foods or whole grains, which could be miles away, residents are left to choose from fast foods and processed foods, which can be high in sodium, sugar, and fats, and lack fiber or nutrients.
