General

What is this tool showing me?

The Community Profiles allows users to view county-level U.S. Census Bureau and National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) data all in one location. Explore data on population, transportation, agriculture, housing, the economy, and more.

Why did you create this tool?

We created this tool to give CFAES researchers and Extension educators an easier way to visualize large amounts of county-level data in one location. U.S. Census Bureau and NASS have many databases with thousands of datasets to choose from. We pulled some of the most frequently requested datasets into one tool. This allows educators to click on a category of interest, choose their county, and view hundreds of datasets in seconds.

Data

What geographies of data are available?

Currently, the data in this tool are at the county-level.

Can you add different geographics or jurisdictions of data (i.e., city, zip code, or census tract)?

No, not at this time.

  1. What are the data sources?

U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey

All census data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS). We have selected data sets from the ACS 5-year estimates data. The ACS data releases data each year.

National Agricultural Statistics Service

The NASS data comes from the Quick States Agricultural Database API from the United States Department of Agriculture. The NASS Census of Agriculture is released every 5 years.

  1. How often are the data updated on the tool?

U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey

The ACS data is updated each year following the release of these data by the U.S. Census Bureau. Typically, the U.S. Census Bureau ACS data is released in December for the previous year. Meaning in December 2023, the ACS 5-year estimates 2022 data will be released. KX will update these data as quickly as we can following the release.

National Agricultural Statistics Service

The NASS data is updated following the release of a new Census of Agriculture release, which occurs every 5 years. KX will update these data as quickly as we can following the release.

  1.  Can you add new data or different data types to the tool?

Yes and no. We pull these data via API from vetted and trusted federal databases. If you would like to see county-level data from a different federal (or national) database, that database would need an API connection. It would also take additional development work to connect to the new database, so adding those data would be delayed depending on project load for KX at the time.

U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey

If you would like to see additional census variables added to the tool from the ACS, we can add those variables. We would need to know the name of the variable, the label, and the concept. Below is an example of what the variable Name, Label, and Concept looks like. You can find that information in the detailed tables from the census website. Click on html under the 2021 ACS Detailed Tables Variable link.

If you do not know how to find that information, you can email kx@osu.edu with as much detailed information as possible about the type of variable you would like to add.

National Agricultural Statistics Service

Right now, we cannot add new NASS variables to the tool. We are working on updating this service in time for the next release of the NASS Census of Agriculture.

  1. How can I get a spreadsheet of these data?

Its easy to download a spreadsheet of the data! Under each topical category of data is a section at the bottom of the tool that gives a general statement about the data you are viewing. Within that statement is a line “download a CSV file with the source data” that allows you to download a CSV of the data you are actively viewing.

  1. Is historical data available to view or download?

Yes, historical data (i.e., going back to 2018) can be viewed on the Knowledge Explorer Tool, but historical data cannot be downloaded at this time. To request a CSV of the historical data, please reach out to us at kx@osu.edu. We will make every attempt to process each request for historical data.
